New Music Format – MusicDNA

Dagfinn Bach and Karlheinz Brandenburg introduced the “Music DNA” files at Cannes’ Midem music conference.  Bach and Brandenburg both have history with mp3 data files.  Bach worked on the fist mp3 player back in 1993 and Brandenburg INVENTED the mp3 file.  The new file can house up to 32 GIGABYTES worth of information including lyrics, album covers, and videos. Their new music format will compete with already released Apple’s iTunes LP.  The new feature they are also pushing is that every time you are connected to their service your file’s will be updated.  Good or bad? I’ll let you decide.

“Because of the large amount of information being packed into the “MusicDNA” files, each track will likely cost more than the $1.29 iTunes currently charges for newer tracks. No major labels have yet to sign pacts with the “MusicDNA” developers, but with the growing presence of iTunes LP, “MusicDNA” seems like technology that Apple’s competitors like the Amazon MP3 store would be interested in working with. “Out of a rusted old VW Beetle we are making a Ferrari,” said Bach Technology’s Stefan Kohlmeyer. “We are taking an existing idea, giving the end user a lot more and making that file much more valuable — like transforming a tiny house into a huge villa.””

Look out for the new file format appearing in the summer of 2010.

Year’s Best View of Mars

“On January 27 Mars will pass within 61 million miles (98 million kilometers) of Earth—close enough for well-equipped sky-watchers to make out details on the Martian surface.

“With a small telescope of about 6 inches (15.2 centimeters), the polar ice caps and other surface features are visible,” said Raminder Singh, staff astronomer at the H.R. MacMillan Space Centre in Vancouver, British Columbia.”

Paul Stamets: 6 Ways Mushrooms Can Save the World

Mycologist Paul Stamets studies the mycelium — and lists 6 ways that this astonishing fungus can help save the world.  Definitely a good video to watch as he explains his theory of the ways mushrooms and fungi can save our world.  I believe the posted video is a shortened version of the whole speech.  Paul Stamets also has other great video speeches/lectures which you can find on video.google.com or youtube.com

Enjoy!

Raster-Noton

I’d like to introduce everyone to my all-time favorite record label, Raster-Noton.  Raster-Noton is an electronic music record label based in Chemnitz, Germany.  The label was founded by Olaf Bender, Carsten Nicolai, and Frank Bretschneider in 1996.  Raster-Noton merged in 1999 from separate labels, Rastermusik and Noton.

The main focus of the label is to produce rhythmic, minimal, electronic music.  Artists such as Alva Noto, AtomTM, Kangding ray, Taylor Dupree have contributed as well as many more top names in the underground electronic scene.  The music is very unconventional.  You will hear a lot of glitching and small changes in the music, sometimes requiring good speakers to get the full spectrum.  The music is produced from the ground up using field samples or completely original synthesized sounds.  The founders are very intelligent people, some being sound engineers.  With their knowledge of the way sound is formed and created, they can warp and direct their music in any way they want.  It makes for some very interesting sounds and ear-catching rhythms and melodies.  Apart from producing music, they have a catalog for strictly art that they have created as well.  Again, the art follows a minimalist approach to things.  When playing live, there is usually a massive screen behind the artist with custom visualizations that go with every glitch in the music.  Very amazing stuff.

Being one of my favorite labels, I highly recommend you check our their website listed below and watch the youtube videos to get a feel for the music.  Like I said, it is very unconventional and may be hard to listen to at first, but stick with it and you will find an artist on R-N to fall in love with.

Steve Reich – Different Trains (1988)

For those of you who don’t know Steve Reich, i’ll give you a very brief introduction. Reich was born in 1936 in New York City but often traveled to California because his parent’s were divorced.  He attended Juilliard (1958-1961) and then attended Mills College and earned his master’s degree in composition.  His works are dated back to 1963 and he continues to produce music to this day.  I suggest looking into Steve Reich’s life more because it is very interesting. According to The Guardian, Reich is ”a handful of living composers who can legitimately claim to have altered the direction of musical history.”

Now moving on to the topic at hand, Reich’s album ‘Different Trains’ which was released in 1988 in a period of Reich’s life that people say his music had more of a darker undertone to it.  He introduced historical themes into his music as well as his Jewish heritage.  The title of the album comes from the fact that Reich had to travel between New York and California on a train to visit his parents.  He later thought of that fact that he may be riding on the Holocaust Trains if he had lived in Europe. Therefore you get a very emotional story of life during World War II.   The music for the strings makes extensive use of paradiddles rhythms, with alternating pitches instead of alternating drum sticking. In addition to speech, the piece includes recordings of train sounds, as well as of sirens and warning bells.  The basis of the album are the melodious speech recordings throughout it.  Trains won a Grammy Award in 1989 for Best Contemporary Classical Composition.  I highly recommend you give this album a listen as well as all of Reich’s other works.  ’Music for 18 Musicians’ and ‘Drumming’ are also amazing albums.

Andrew Cullop

Hello everyone!  I’ll start off the New Year by introducing my good friend Andrew Cullop.  He is a singer/songwriter based in Roanoke, VA.  His main focus is acoustic/folk music, but he has also been experimenting and producing electronic tracks under the name Children of the Star.

Andrew plays in various venues all over the Roanoke/Tri-City Area – places like the Oasis Hookah Longue and the old Plan 9 store.  His main influences include Stephen Kellogg, Speechwriters LLC, and Ryan Adams. Andrew takes his influences, adds a twist, and overlays it with his very unique sounding vocals, which makes for some very good music.  A lot of his songs are themed around love, small towns, and beautiful girls.  I highly recommend you check out his website listed below.  Also check out his Children of the Star side project which can also be found on his MySpace.
